“This is the best way to start a Saturday!”, said one!.
Saturday morning over 30 seniors in our area came for a delicious breakfast of pancakes, waffles, sausage and fruit. We love serving our members. Laughter permeated the room as everyone chatted together. We value people because God does too. Wish you were here!
We arrived at the Holiday Inn Express this past Sunday afternoon. It’s a new hotel on the property of Pioneers, a wonderful ministry aimed at planting new churches. Ken and I met on a missions trip hosted by Pioneers back in 1982 so they are special to us.
We’re here this week for MACR meetings. At Wycliffe Bible Translators, that stands for Member and Care Resources, a part of Human Resources. Ken’s department, Senior Benefits, and Anne’s as well, fall under this department.
Every two years we meet together for several days. We learn about each others roles and how we can work better together. The theme seems to be “Transitions” which is appropriate as Wycliffe USA has a new president, and new COO and a new HR officer as well as many other positions. Our jobs are new too, so we’re in good company.
Today we talked at length about how our work in the area of retirement aids in the vision of Bible Translation. One of the big takeaways was that people made in the image of God have value and therefore we should care for them from the moment they join our ministry into retirement.
Thank you for partnering with us as we serve over 3,000 members of Wycliffe Bible Translators USA.
Ken and his two associates.
Anne went to Bible School with the Fletcher children.
Sometimes I go through a day or month and think, “What have I accomplished?” It’s nice to look at a list with items checked off or to look at photos to see where I’ve been. It’s also great to see how my work and service hours are accomplishing much for the Kingdom of God.
We love Bible Translation! We think that having the Bible available in the format and language that you use most often is the best way to know God and His plan for your life. That’s why we’ve invested in Wycliffe Bible Translators for almost 30 years. And you have done so also as you’ve supported us prayerfully and financially.
So take a look back at this short video and praise God for what YOU’VE been a part of in 2018. It’s worth celebrating!
It’s February! For some reason, January seemed so long for me this year. I think it may be because we packed it in with so many travels. For this post, I’ll share some photos so you can catch up with us. I’ll be writing a newsletter soon now that we are home for a bit!
Laura and Christine, March 1992, Irian Jaya, Indonesia.
It’s January 1, so naturally I’m cleaning my house like everyone else! I came across a journal I kept when we first arrived in Indonesia in March 1992. It’s so interesting to hear my thoughts. I was reminded of things that were so new but became so “ordinary” like lizards that live in your home. We left them so that they would eat the mosquitoes.
One evening, less than a month after arriving the girls and I (aged 6 and 7) wrote a silly poem based on Psalm 23.
M is for Mommy, I shall not want, She makes me lie down in my bed, She leads me to taksis each day, She repairs my clothes, She guides me through crowds of people for shopping sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valleys of Irian Jaya, I will feel no evil, My umbrella and string bag go with me.
She prepares my food three times a day in the presence of ants.
Surely Mommy and Daddy will follow me to school all the days of my youth, And I will dwell in their house for a long as they can stand me!
With apologies to King David!
Thanks for sticking with us from the heat of Indonesia to the warmth of North Carolina. The work continues reaching the Bible-less people groups of the world!
Brian & Anita Weber, Jan Schenk (not pictured Larry Schenk)
It was a long trip but well worth it. We drove from North Carolina to Michigan so that we could spend time with the Haugh side of the family for Thanksgiving. We don’t get to celebrate holidays with any family very often. It’s still a treat to join them in their traditions.
While there we had breakfast with some of our most ardent prayer supporters. The Webers and the Shenks have been a part of a group call the Haugh Advisory Prayer group (HAP) for 28 years. They, along with quite a number of others, have met once a month to pray for our family and for Wycliffe Bible Translators. They always ask good questions and make sure they really understand how we are doing that day in that week in that month. We love them dearly.
In six short days we’ll be taking another trip, this one to Edmonton, Canada. There we will be doing a two week course entitled “Leadership Matters.” There we will be studying with others from around the world. Since we are both entering new leadership roles (Ken on December 1), we are excited to combine some new management skills with our past experiences. We’re grateful to still be used for the Kingdom of God.
We’re grateful for you too. Please join us in prayer for safe travels and open minds as we learn December 2-15.
I love reading my Bible. I like to do it in an organized way that challenges me. That’s one of the reasons I’m involved with Bible Study Fellowship. But I also have loved using The Bible App (YouVersion) to both read the Bible and do some specific devotionals. This summer I used it to study the Minor Prophets. There are many different devotionals on this app, some lasting a year and some lasting just days.
Wycliffe Bible Translators has recently published a short 6-day devotional on this app. It’s called “In This Together.” Check it out here! We’re all in life together!
Our next newsletter will be out soon. There you can watch a video on Indonesians working together to translate the Bible into their heart language. The translators saw one man crying as he read the new Scriptures. He said, “I’ve known my whole life that Jesus Christ died for me, but this is the first time I have understood why!”
We love that we have been TOGETHER with so many of you year after year. We hope you are enjoying God’s words this week in your own language!
We were so pleased that we could attend the Scripture dedication celebration this year! 30 Bibles were dedicated this year. That translates to over 12 million people who get to read the Bible in their own language!
At the celebration in Waxhaw, NC the Bibles were brought in on an African seat usually used to carry a chief into the village. The story was told that the chief insisted that the newly printed Bible in his language be carried in on this seat since it was the most important thing of use for his people. We heard stories and saw wonderful videos of people dancing and praising God because they can now read the Bible in their mother tongue.
This video is of the celebration at our headquarters in Orlando, Florida. Enjoy. You helped with your faithful giving and prayer for many years!
Hurricane Florence arrived in the Carolinas with a vengeance this past week. We prepared our home by putting everything away that was outdoors. We filled our tubs with water and bought food.
We prayed.
Living under a canopy of huge trees brings one to their knees during a hurricane.
But we were spared the worst of the storm, not even losing our electricity which was such a surprise.
Others did not fare as well, getting flooded, stranded or having to leave their homes.
We had one tree fall down in our yard. Anne heard it breaking while on the phone and threw the phone down, yelling for Ken. The tree hit the ground with a thud but missed our house. The “Y” in the tree split on either side of two sides of our house. Wow.
I wonder how many other “close calls” there have been in my life that I am not even aware of. I wonder how many other things could have harmed me yet I was spared.
But why do others get hit? These are the questions that have had people questioning a loving God for years. I’m sure others prayed this week too, but have lost so much. I don’t presume to be more righteous than them. Perhaps God knows they can handle problems better than I can!
I hope this week goes well for you…storms or no storms. One of you has just buried a son. God is your strength in this time of trouble. Another of you needs a job desperately. I know that God has one for you and pray that you will hear His voice.
