Keeping busy

“Oh, you’re the IT* guy! I need to talk with YOU!”

That is the response Ken has heard each time he has introduced himself in the last 12 hours!

Thank you for praying! Ken has safely arrived in Jos, Nigeria once again. He ate, napped, and is hoping he can sleep through part of the night before starting work tomorrow. His roommate is a pastor from Orlando, Florida who will be participating in the New Testament workshop.

As mentioned in our email update, Ken will be busy doing behind-the-scenes work on the computers of the Nigerian translators.

Please continue to pray for wisdom as he helps each person the next 10 days.

* IT is pronounced “Eye-Tee” as in “Information Technology.” You know…computer geek guy. 🙂

Back It Up!

I once heard a dentist say, “Only brush the teeth you want to keep.” Makes sense. But what does that have to do with Bible Translation, computers, and/or computing?

It’s the principle. In other words, back up only those files you want to keep.

People are now using their computer for both work and home use, saving critical information, photos, videos, and the like. Unfortunately, I have encounter only a few that regularly backing up their computer despite the fact that Windows, Macs, and Linux systems have their own back up software and, if you don’t like them, free third-party programs as well.

I recently came across this article about backing up one’s computer. Although it written some time ago, it is still quite relevant. Click here to read more.

I personally use the Windows 7 built-in image creator and restore disc to prepare for a hard drive failure. I also back up my computer data to two different external USB hard drives. It works well. The major disadvantage though, is that the hard drives are in the same location so all of my data would be lost in the event of a fire or flood. And, although some would say that my computer data would be the least of my worries in a situation like that, I still don’t want to take a chance loosing years of data including twenty six years of ministry pictures. Backing up to the cloud would certainly help in this case. I just need to get around to it.

The following articles evaluate various online back up services. May I encourage you take a look and choose one. In the event of a hard drive catastrophic failure, you’ll be glad you did.

Two Exceptional Software Utilities

For years I’ve used two programs called FolderClone Pro and FolderMatch to back up and/or synchronize my data. Both these programs and others are created by Saltybrine software, a company run by dedicated Christians that use their resources for kingdom purposes. They are excellent utilities, as attested to by the comments on their homepage and reviews by others.

May I encourage you to give them a try as well. You’re data will be secure and you won’t be sorry.

Disk Defragging

I talked about spring cleaning in yesterday’s post. Today, I took some of my own advice and performed some disc cleaning on Anne’s computer. (I just received a new laptop from Wycliffe Associates and don’t need it quite yet). I used Auslogic’s DiskDefrag and find it to be so much better and faster than Window’s built-in defragmenter. According to their website, the program…

    • Optimizes file system
    • Consolidates free space
    • Can defrag automatically
    • Provides flexible scheduler
    • Can defrag a single file or folder
    • Supports multi-terabyte volumes

I know individuals that highly recommend it as well. It’s free so give it a try and let me know what you think.

Spring Cleaning

With the coming of spring comes spring cleaning. As they say in Poland, “you gotta do what spring cleaningya gotta do” so we get to it. But, have you ever thought about spring cleaning your computer?

Here’s an excellent PC Magazine article on cleaning up your computer. I’ve also included a link on PC Mag’s best Tune Up Utilities, both free and paid.

Here’s an excellent and helpful TechRepublic checklist entitled “Items to Address with a PC  Tune-up” that will help you remember WHAT to focus on in maintaining your computer.

Best Free Microsoft Downloads and Cool Win 7 tools

Gizmo’s, one of favorite sites to discovering free software, has an excellent article on free Microsoft software. Gizmo’s also has recommendations for Apple and Linux operating systems.

Both Anne and I have an e-book reader. Anne has a Nook, from Barnes & Noble, and I have an Amazon Kindle. We both love our readers – they are so compact but are able to store so much reading material. So, we found this article on free e-books quite helpful.

Tech Republic is one of my favorite web sites. They recently published this following article on 10 cool Windows 7 tools. Check it out…
