#GivingTuesday is tomorrow!
You’re invited to join us for Giving Tuesday on Nov. 28. After experiencing the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is a global day focused on giving back during the holidays.
The potential is so great for this special day! You know from experience that when communities come together to make a difference, each person giving what they are able, great things are accomplished. And when the cause they gather around is close to God’s heart, we should be ready to see God multiply our efforts!
For the 2017 Giving Tuesday, we hope you’ll share in our goal to print 1,500 copies of the newly translated Bible for the Giryama people of Kenya. Each copy costs only $8. For some that might mean packing a brown bag lunch for work so they can give one copy. Others might feel lead to skip family night at the movies, and give five.

Death Cleaning
Bob’s hat
The headline caught my eye. There is a Swedish word meaning “death cleaning”. It means decluttering as you look forward to your own death. As soon as you realize your own mortality, you start thinking about paring down the stuff in your homes. Sharing special items with family and friends or just donating them to others is a way we can prepare for our own deaths but also makes it easier for our loved ones when they have to come and clean out our homes.
On Monday morning, I arrived at work at the Waxhaw Creek Apartments, the retirement housing Wycliffe has in our Waxhaw, NC area. My boss informed me that one of the residents had passed away. Because of some software changes going on in our organization, I wasn’t able to work on our department’s receipts and had some time on my hands.
“Would you be willing to clean out Bob’s refrigerator and freezer?,” my boss asked me. Of course, I would. Off we trooped down to his one bedroom apartment. Contact had still not been made with Bob’s family, so we were careful to leave his goods and papers in place until they could arrive.
Bob lived a rather spartan life compared to most Americans. I guess living in a village in Papua New Guinea for over 40 years would do that to you. His home was filled with just the basics: food, clothing, books and important papers. It made me a little sad at first, seeing how little he lived with. But after cleaning out his refrigerator and finding the task quick and easy I found that I admired him more than felt sorry for him.
Bob spent most of his adult life working in literacy for the Waris people of Papua New Guinea. You have probably never heard of these people. I didn’t. But God knows them and loves them and created them in HIS image. He also gave them a beautiful language. And now they can read about God in their own Mother Tongue because of people like Bob who are willing to live without a lot of stuff so that others can have what is really important: God’s very words.
I went home on Monday and thought about all the stuff I have in my house that seems so important. Just cleaning out my freezer would take twice the time it took to clean Bob’s because it is stuffed with bits and pieces of this and that. I have something in every closet and drawer in my house. What does all my stuff say about me and what’s important to me?
Jesus Christ and the message of His salvation is the most important thing to me. It’s time to make sure my house reflects that.

I clicked on the video and heard the voice of Wycliffe Bible Translators founder, William Cameron Townsend, speaking and reading verses from the Bible.
Revelation 7:9 “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands”
We’re celebrating 75 years of a concerted effort to give everyone, all people, God’s very words in their own tongue.
And by “we’re” I mean YOU and I!!

Two Verbs: Come & Go
Wycliffe Bible Translators is celebrating 75 years of existence in 2017! We’re proud to have been part of that heritage for over a third of that time (27 years). On the occasion of their 50th anniversary, acclaimed preacher, Billy Graham, spoke to a group of people about the importance of Bible Translation.
Listen to this 2+ minute Billy Graham video of his impassioned plea for workers! In it he says, “It might be said that Jesus only had two verbs: ‘Come & Go’. Come unto me and Go into all the world!”

Wycliffe Bible Translators recently celebrated their 3,000 translated Bible! It’s so great to be part of an organization that is ridding the world of Bible Poverty.

No…THIS is Us
There is a popular television show running (which I’ve never seen). It’s title is This is Us.
As I sat and read what our partner Wycliffe Associates accomplished last year, which included the work of Ken, I thought, “No, THIS is us.”
Your prayers and financial support allowed Ken to take a multitude of trips in order to support our national Bible Translators. Together, much was accomplished.

Step-by-Step
It’s so wonderful to see people using their God-given gifts. Often times it doesn’t even feel like work for them.
Ken’s work includes training nationals on Bible translation software. Since everyone learns in different ways, he always includes a variety of modalities when he teaches. Although each course is different, he often teaches and demonstrates how to use the software and/or has the course participants read the material on their own. This is often accompanied by a related video, practicing the concept alone, or solidifying their newly learned material by demonstrating it to their classroom neighbor.
In his most recent trip, Ken created a support document and sent it to our Indonesian counterparts in advance so they could translate it into bahasa Indonesian for the class. They could now read in their Mother Tongue, the language that not only speaks to the heart but facilitates comprehension in the head, to learn the software. We love it when people can use their own language to learn as well as to read God’s Words! Having documentation in your own language is a big deal for our colleagues.

Finally! Graduation
It’s been a long time in the making, but Anne has finally graduated from college. On Friday, May 6, she received her B.S. in Communications with a concentration in Interpersonal and Organizational Communications.
We are so grateful for all who prayed for us and donated funds to make this happen. She graduated debt free. We enjoyed a weekend of celebrating with friends and family including a surprise visit from daughter Christine.
