Lord, Teach Us How to Pray

Do you sometimes have difficulty knowing how to pray, what to pray for, or how to pray without repeating the same stuff over and over again? I know I do. And, I suspect I’m not alone. In fact, Jesus’ disciples experienced the same problem and they walked with him.

My brother-in-law, Alan, is a pastor. This past holiday, he gave me the “Bookmark Prayer Card Sampler Pack” prayer cards from NavPress that he had received and thoroughly enjoyed, suggesting that I would too. He was right. They are topical, very specific in their wording, and articulate prayer in ways that I can’t. So, I’ve been reading and praying through them.

We have a holiday tradition where each of us share a special event in our lives over the past year. Esther, Alan’s wife, challenged our children to pick up the torch of Christ and carry it strong. Immediately thereafter, I read one of the prayer cards that addresses that very issue. So I decided to share it because, as my daughters, nieces, and nephews are especially dear to my heart, so is prayer for them. I hope it is helpful and/or challenging to you as well.

I am writing it out in its’ entirety so you have a better idea what I mean. I hope it means as much to you or challenges you in your prayer life as much as it has meant to me and challenged me to pray for my daughters, nieces, and nephews. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s the purpose of life?

Have you ever wondered why you are doing what you’re doing? I have. It was in the mid 70’s when I was working for a major U.S. company. Two of my work colleagues died, the first one week before he retired and the second one week after he retired, that caused me to consider the purpose of life. I was reading the Bible at the same time and came across the Mark 8: 34-36 verses that say, “Then he (Jesus) called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his lifec will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”

These verses challenged me to consider my work, my purpose, and my life. It was then I asked God into my life, relocated to Billings, MT and started all over again. God has since led me into missions and, although there were times you could have given me $.50 and a plane ticket and I was “outta here”, I can’t imagine doing anything else.

And here’s why. May I challenge you to click on the link below to watch this video and see how technology is speeding up the process of Bible translation. Providing the technical infrastructure for our national co-translators is the work I’ll be focusing on this year, possibly even installing the BGAN satellites in Africa, India, or other locations in the near future. It’s exciting, give me purpose, and I’m glad I have the privilege of doing what I’m doing!

Sending Large Files

Sharing large files can sometimes be a challenge. Email administrators often limit the size one can attach to their email and send through the servers. And, there are sites that allow you to share large files but many of them limit the size to 100 MB or so. At Filedropper.com, you can upload files as large as 5 GB. They’re easy to download, too. I like not having to wait and there are no ads or complications.

YouSendIt.com also offers free 2 GB file and folder transfers but their free version limits one to 100 MB. A paid subscription allows for much larger files.

Remember too, that you can also send files through Skype when you Skyping with a friend or family member. The user on the other end of your conversation has to allow the file to be sent to their computer and it seems a little slow but it does work.

Can You Hear Me Now?

“Can you hear me now?” the man asked as he walked the country testing Verizon’s wireless capability. Of course, the answer was always yes. But, what about those living in very remote parts of the world?

One of our previous newsletters talked about how a Wycliffe/Seed Company/Wycliffe Associates/JAARS satellite connectivity project is changing the face of Bible translation for those living in remote regions of the world. National translators translate the Scriptures into their mother tongue and then, using satellite connectivity, upload their translation to translation consultants all around the world located thousands of miles away. The consultant checks and then sends the new Scripture portion to the national translator. All of this is done in areas lacking land line and internet connectivity! It really is amazing.

Check out Hank Scott’s “Low Power Field Deployment” photos of past BGAN satellite deployments and see how interested our national colleagues involved in Bible translation are.

This project is bringing us closer and closer to Vision 2025 realization where every language on earth has a Bible translation started in their mother tongue. How does the satellite work, you might ask? Go to this website, click on the appropriate language, and watch how small satellite equipment can connect a remote national translator to the world.

Each BGAN satellite system cost approximately $1,600 so this is an expensive endeavor. But God’s people are giving generously so that others are able to hear the Good News too. What a blessing.

Looking for a new printer?

I was looking for a new, wireless printer recently and found myself looking through a multitude of web sites/pages to find the best, most affordable one. If you find yourself in the same boat, look no more. Well, at least here’s a place to start.

PC Magazine has just published an article on their Top 10 Best Printers. Take a look and let me know what you think.

A Fast Way to Improve Computer Performance

If it suddenly seems that your computer is running real slow and the drive light is flickering like crazy (geek speak = “thrashing”), you can correct the problem by installing more memory. And, for most systems it’s not that hard. So, before you tear down your system, unplug the cables, lug the machine to the car, drive to the computer store, wait to have RAM installed, and pay for the service—read Microsoft At Home’s article entitled, “Add More Memory to Your Computer” on how to install it yourself.

Disk Defragging

I talked about spring cleaning in yesterday’s post. Today, I took some of my own advice and performed some disc cleaning on Anne’s computer. (I just received a new laptop from Wycliffe Associates and don’t need it quite yet). I used Auslogic’s DiskDefrag and find it to be so much better and faster than Window’s built-in defragmenter. According to their website, the program…

    • Optimizes file system
    • Consolidates free space
    • Can defrag automatically
    • Provides flexible scheduler
    • Can defrag a single file or folder
    • Supports multi-terabyte volumes

I know individuals that highly recommend it as well. It’s free so give it a try and let me know what you think.
