The Look

Everyone parent and every child knows “the Look.” You know, when the child is fidgeting in church and you turn to them and “look” at them? Or maybe it’s at the dinner table! Everyone is holding hands so you can pray and then two kids start arguing because one is squeezing the hand of the other too hard? They get “the Look” from the parent.

Stop.

Cut. It. Out.

It might look like this:

When my dad gave me “the Look” or when my husband gave our girls “the Look” they usually stopped what they were doing immediately and settled down. While each of us love our children immensely, sometimes we don’t love their behavior. “The Look” gets them back on track.

In John 18, we read the account of Peter who denies Jesus three times when asked if he was a follower of Jesus. The book of Luke (22:61-62)  records that Jesus “looked straight at Peter” after he refused to admit three times to others that he was a follower of Jesus.

The difference between my parenting look and this look of Jesus was that this was not a gesture of condemnation. Instead, it was one of complete love and of one who knew Peter’s heart. He knew that Peter loved Him deeply, he knew that Peter would deny Him (he had warned him), yet he still loved him.

What struck me again was the difference between Peter’s remorse over his sin and Judas’ actions after he had turned Jesus in. While Judas immediately ran out and hung himself, Peter didn’t. He wept bitterly, but he still came to the place where Jesus was hung on a cross. We know from later chapters and church history that Peter went on to be a great leader and writer in the church.

Why the difference?

Because one had a relationship with Jesus and the other didn’t. Judas hung out with Jesus and looked like he was a disciple of Him, but his heart had never really changed. He was the same sinful Judas, whereas Peter spent the same amount of time with Jesus and had a changed life. Yes, he was loud and impulsive (sounds like me) but little by little, he turned different areas over to the Lordship of his Savior.

We don’t have the privilege of physically walking and talking with Jesus, but we do have the Holy Spirit with us here on earth who guides us as we have a relationship with the entire Trinity.

We have been given God’s very words to read and study so we can learn from people like Judas, Peter, and even Jesus Himself. That’s why we are committed to getting God’s Word in to the hands of the Bibleless people of the world!

Who will you be today? Choose to be a Peter…a follower…a sojourner. Then when you get “the Look” you’ll know it is one full of love, not condemnation, and you too can look forward to the day when you see Jesus face to face.

Ok…I doodled!

We were gifted a few days at the beach last week, so I practiced my doodling while walking alone one morning.

Thanks for praying as Ken spends two weeks in our Orlando, FL office. He’ll be serving our members who are on furlough as they get refreshed and cared for at our home office.

No…THIS is Us

tim-marshall-114623There is a popular television show running (which I’ve never seen). It’s title is This is Us.

As I sat and read what our partner Wycliffe Associates accomplished last year, which included the work of Ken, I thought, “No, THIS is us.”

Your prayers and financial support allowed Ken to take a multitude of trips in order to support our national Bible Translators. Together, much was accomplished.

Here are the stats:

  •   Currently Accelerating the work of Bible translation in 76 countries

  •   Last year mobilized 7,097 volunteer and staff members to advance the cause of Bible translation throughout the world in 76 countries

  •   Installed 544 Bible Translation Acceleration Kits (BTAKs) in 48 countries for 788 language communities since started installing BTAKs

  •   315 new translation projects started in 2016 using Mobilized Assistance Supporting Translation (MAST) workshops

  •   Improved hundreds of facilities for Bible translation around the world

Nicely done, partners.

Sheep Stealers…the T people

Screen Shot 2016-05-30 at 11.26.50 AMPicture this. A rugged mountainous South East Asian country. This country is not open to the religion of Christianity. But through the work of Wycliffe Associates and their colleagues, the Open Bible Stories (OBS) have been translated into the national language.
The Open Bible Stories are 51 stories from the Bible that cover that basics from Genesis until Revelation. Beautiful pictures accompany each story and the Good News is clearly communicated.  These are a great resource for opening the door to translating a Bible in various languages. Ken has been a part of the workshops that support these translations.
The 2,500 Christians in this region are hungry for God’s words in their own language so the pastors in the T language are excited to use this resource.  Although the community is uneducated with approximately 80% unable to read or write, they long to learn more about their Savior. The local pastor also plans on distributing 1,000 OBS to the various villages in the area to reach an unchurched and unengaged group. The pastor says that there is a lot of false teaching as well as sheep stealing in this region. A picture Bible will be perfect for them!
Will you pray right now for the T people?
Prayer:
-Distribution of 1,000 OBS
-Open doors for Bible Translation
-Traveling needs for the distribution

Key Word Check

Checking for Key Words

Checking for Key Words

This week Ken was able to help out during the translation process. His job was to make sure that all the key words in a certain passage are actually in the new translation and that they are translated properly. Just one step in making sure people have the Word of God in their Mother Tongue.

Some parts of this task are laborious…but it’s all worth it. Thank you for praying this week!

I love Technology!

My favorite man!

My favorite man!

Oh, how times have changed! When we traveled 25 years ago after first joining Wycliffe, our family wouldn’t hear from us for 3-5 days until we had arrived at our location and set up our computer. But now, if Ken is traveling to a large city like he’s in now, we have so many more options.

Ken departed from Orlando, Florida early Saturday morning. He flew to Minneapolis and gave me a call on his cell phone. He texted me goodbye just before departing for Southeast Asia. I woke up Sunday morning to hear he had landed at the country next along the route. By the time I got out of church on Sunday morning, I knew he had landed because I was flight following, keeping an eye on his flight online (before and after church, of course!).

When I was sitting on the couch Sunday night, I got a FaceTime call, with video, from Ken who was starting his first day of work! Video! We don’t get that too often!

Technology is awesome (when it works the way you want it to!) and you have access to it.

Ken is on the other side of the world helping a group embrace some new technology in order to expedite the translation process. New tablets outfitted with an exterior keyboard will house the 51 newly translated stories which can be uploaded after checking to a website that anyone in the world can have access to. From there, each participant will return to their home country and continue to proceed with their Mother Tongue language.

Thank you once again for helping us to make this happen.Your monthly support and prayers allow us to keep the technology coming for our partners around the world.

P. S. The Enemy prowls around looking for whom it can devour…please pray for these participants the next two weeks!

Promises Promises

“Who will not fear you, O Lord,
and bring glory to your name.
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
and worship before you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

I love this promise and prophecy from God in his book of Revelations! Did you see the highlighted words? ALL NATIONS! All nations with all of their own languages will one day worship our God together. One way to reach them? Give them the words of God in their own language so they know how to get to heaven! Their worship can begin here on earth!

This is the work of Wycliffe Bible Translators and Wycliffe Associates. I’m so glad we get to be a part of it with you.

Wednesday night we’ll be sharing at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, SC. Hope to see you there!
